Understanding Licensing & Insurance for Contractors

A license shows that a contractor has met your state's minimum requirements for training and knowledge in their trade. You can usually verify a license number through your state's contractor licensing board website.

Insurance is just as important. Liability insurance covers damage to your property during the job, while workers' compensation protects you if a worker is injured on your property.

Always ask to see proof of both before work begins. A hesitant or evasive answer to this question is a red flag worth taking seriously.

Working with a licensed, insured professional costs more upfront in some cases, but it protects you from liability and poor workmanship down the line.
